Breaker and Circuit Requirements for Hot Tubs

At Spa Pros, we know that safety is the foundation of a truly stress-free hydrotherapy experience. That means that every hot tub must be installed on a dedicated GFCI protected circuit.  This isn't optional, nor a code formality, it is the safety mechanism that prevents electrocution if a fault were to develop with your hot tub.

Local & National Electrical Code (NEC 2023 Article 680) require GFCI protection for all outdoor spas and hot tubs. This protection detects ground faults and cuts the power to your hot tub within milliseconds to prevent electric shock in wet environments.

  • A typical 240V hot tub requires that a dedicated 2-pole 50A GFCI breaker is installed in the main panel or in a subpanel. The circuit should serve no other devices to prevent nuisance tripping and code compliance issues. Some models need 40A or 60A breakers depending on pump count, heater size,  and additional features. You will need to consult with an electrician.
  • For 120V plug-and-play tubs: These  models usually need a single-pole 15–20A breaker on a dedicated circuit.  Protection comes from an in-line GFCI in the power cord or a GFCI outlet installed outdoors in a weatherproof in-use cover. An electrician can install the GFCI protected outlet for you, or you can have a technician from Spa Pros replace your GFCI power cord end.
  • Check below for examples of GFCIs that might be installed or needed for your hot tub.
